Pornography/Erotica: Entertainment? Cheating? Something else?

  • Circle Counseling 1226 S. Broad Street Philadelphia, PA 19146 (map)

Pornography and erotica serve multiple purposes, affecting couples and individuals in a variety of ways. This workshop looks specifically at how conflict over pornography and erotica use--and non-use--might reflect unmet intimacy longings, fears, and pain.

Couples who have disagreements around pornography and erotica often take on victim-or-villain roles, pretend to ignore what is happening, hide their vices, avoid intimacy, attack each other, or make overwhelming demands. Single people might not get too close to others due to fear of judgment or of disappointment with a potential partner’s choices. Pornography and erotica users and non-users alike can feel insecure, ashamed, misunderstood, and dehumanized, leading to decreases in mental health, self-esteem/self-image, and relationship satisfaction.

A key element in the conflict is an internal barrier to communicating with openness and care. This workshop will help attendees get to the heart of their conflict around pornography and erotica use (and non-use). Participants will begin to interrupt patterns of blaming and shaming themselves and their partners. They will practice clear, compassionate, and honest communication that builds intimacy so they can ask for what they truly need.

Participants can rest assured they won't be asked to share personal stories. Pre-written scenarios and samples of scripts will be provided for demonstration and practice.
